JUST TRANSITION TOWARDS A NET-ZERO SOCIETY
A SUPPORT TOOL FOR THE CO-DESIGN OF STRATEGIES IN TICINO
Welcome on the TiSDG project website, promoted by the Centro management e imprenditorialità (CMI) of the Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI), in collaboration with the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) and with the Millenium Institute.

The project has a duration of three years (2024-2027) and is supported by the BRIDGE Discovery program funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and INNOSUISSE.
THE VISION OF THE PROJECT
The project stems from the commitments made by the Confederation regarding climate change (net zero emissions by 2050) and sustainability, in reference to the national sustainable development strategy (SSS2030) and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (2030 Agenda).

Ticino is adopting goals in line with those of the Confederation, particularly through the Cantonal Energy and Climate Plan (PECC), which is currently being defined. Achieving the PECC's goals will have significant impacts on the economy, society, and the natural environment of the Canton. In general, any transition to climate neutrality involves large-scale structural changes that generate "losers" and "winners." To have a chance of success (achieving and maintaining climate neutrality), the transition process must be both fair and sustainable.

The complexity of the system's impacts on the economy, society, and the natural environment of the Canton poses a significant challenge to defining consistent and effective strategies. How can we ensure that the strategy chosen to reduce greenhouse gas emissions also promotes biodiversity, sustainable consumption, employment, equity, and gender equality?

THE TOOL
The tool at the heart of this project aims to support the definition of consistent strategies for the climate neutrality of the Canton, taking into account a wide range of economic, social, and ecological impacts at the system level. By doing so, the tool enables the identification and prioritization of those initiatives that simultaneously produce positive effects on multiple goals and avoid undesirable effects (even indirectly).

At a technical level, the tool consists of a dynamic model (based on the System Dynamics methodology) capable of simulating the entire socio-economic and environmental system of the Canton over a medium-to-long-term time frame (2020 - 2050). The results cover all 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 82 key indicators defined by the 2030 Agenda. The existing version of the model (iSDG) has already been applied in various contexts (both industrialized and developing countries), but always at the national level. The project will adapt iSDG for a cantonal application.
OBJECTIVES
1. Collaborate with local actors, both public (Canton) and private (trade associations, trade unions, civil society organizations, etc.), to define strategies for a just and sustainable climate transition in Ticino.

2. Co-develop with local actors a dynamic model that allows the evaluation of the impacts of these strategies, considering the United Nations' indicators and sustainable development goals over a medium-to-long-term time horizon (2020 - 2050).
3. Apply the model to assess the impacts of the climate transition strategies.
4. Develop consistent strategies for a just and sustainable transition towards the Canton’s climate neutrality by 2050.
